Future research and technology integration for urban ecosystems

Fraunhofer IAO is partner of the future festival FUTUROMUNDO FORESIGHT

Stuttgart/Germany, February 20, 2025. Fraunhofer IAO and Futuromundo Multi-Conference & Festivals officially announce their cooperation and the speaker line-up for Futuromundo Foresight 2025. The Future Urban Economies Forum on the future of value creation opportunities and design potential of urban spaces is one of several conferences that will take place as part of the Futuromundo Festival on 3 July 2025 in Stuttgart at the Liederhalle.

What will the city of tomorrow look like? Increasing urbanisation and the crucial role of cities in the climate transformation are opening up new opportunities to develop urban spaces in a future-oriented way. Smart and sustainable urban systems require innovative concepts for the future urban economies – housing, construction, mobility, energy, communication, entertainment, security and much more.

Futuromundo Foresight: The Future Urban Economies Forum

The Futuromundo Foresight Conference offers participants the opportunity to familiarise themselves with ambitious visions and innovative business models for the city of tomorrow. The Future Urban Economies Forum is curated by the Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Engineering IAO and will take place on 3 July 2025 as part of the Futuromundo Multi-Conference & Festival in Stuttgart at the Liederhalle.

‘Based on international projects for urban developments, we are showing forward-looking solutions. We need real leaps forward, innovative approaches and new logics in the value creation of urban ecosystems,’ says Prof Dr Vanessa Borkmann, curator of the Futuromundo Foresight Festival and moderator of the day as well as head of the Urban System Design research department at Fraunhofer IAO. ‘Simply adapting existing solutions will not take us into the future.’

Gordon Sommer, Managing Director of Futuromundo GmbH, agrees and adds: ‘Futuromundo sees itself as a movement that wants to spread courage and openness for the future. Together with Fraunhofer IAO, we are building bridges as part of Futuromundo Foresight in order to actively inspire the future design of urban spaces. We approached Fraunhofer IAO specifically because the institute stands for technological expertise, innovative networks and creativity to break new ground. The partnership with Fraunhofer IAO is designed for the long term and we look forward to actively shaping the future together.’

Trends, futurology and a look into practice

Internationally renowned experts will provide insights into visionary perspectives and approaches to finding innovative solutions to economic and social challenges. The forum will be opened by Dr Steffen Braun, Deputy Director of the Fraunhofer IAO, with a look at futurology and innovation for transformation in urban areas.

Speakers include Eduardo Bastitta, CEO of ‘+Colonia’, with an impulse on ‘Future Living’ Urban Ecosystem Development in Uruguay, Jason Shuster and Joe Appleton from ‘Bizztech’ with a presentation on Urban Metaverse and Digital Twins, and ‘Trendscout Future of Work & Learn’ at Vitra, Raphael Gielgen, with an outlook on innovation as a strategy.

Futuromundo Foresight also offers a platform for making new contacts and working together on the design of smart and sustainable cities.
